The mission of the Copiague Memorial Public Library is to enrich the lives of the members of the community by empowering its citizens’ personal, educational and professional growth. The library is dedicated to advancing literacy and fostering life-long learning. The Library exists to provide all segments of the population within the geographic boundaries of the Copiague Union Free School District with effective and free public library services.  It shall be the Library’s goal to offer the widest range of services consistent with its economic support in order to provide a significant community informational, educational and cultural resource.

The Library was chartered in 1960 and was originally located in one room at the Great Neck Road Elementary School.  In 1969, the Library moved to the renovated Copiague Fire Department building on Great Neck Road.  This facility housed the Library’s growing collection, which then comprised over 24,000 items available to 9,500 patrons.  By 1973, the Library was serving over 13,500 patrons and the collection had grown to over 35,000 items.

As the late 1980’s approached, it became apparent that the Library, continuing to grow at a rapid pace, was again in need of a new home.  The community approved a bond issue in 1987 to build a new Library on property owned by the school district.  Our current building opened its doors to the public in November 1989, and was officially dedicated in May 1990.

Today the Library has over 145,000 items in its collection, including books, magazines and newspapers, compact discs, books on CD, and DVDs; nearly 50 public access computers; and a variety of programs and other offerings to service the needs of our community.
